The lungs are apart of a group of organs and tissues that work together to help you breathe. This system is called the respiratory system. The main job of this system is to get fresh air in, and remove waste gasses from the body. Oxygen is needed by every cell in your body in order to live. The air that comes in the body through the lungs contains oxygen and other gasses. From the lungs, the oxygen is moved into the bloodstream and carried into the body. At each cell in the body, the oxygen cells are exchanged for waste gas called carbon dioxide. The bloodstream then carries the waste gas back into the lungs where the waste gas is removed from the blood stream and then exhaled from the body. Gas exchange is preformed automatically by the lungs and respiratory system, and that is why the lungs are so important. The respiratory system also bring air to proper body temperature, moisturize inhaled air to right humidity, protecting body from harmful diseases (by coughing, sneezing, filtering, or swallowing them), and the sense of smell.
